Immunological effects of nano-enabled hyperthermia for solid tumors: opportunity and challenge

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 3,   Pages 333-344 doi: 10.1007/s11705-021-2059-5

Abstract: Compared to conventional hyperthermia that is limited by low selectivity and severe side effects, nano-enabled hyperthermia yields great potentials to tackle these limitations for cancer treatment. Another major advance is the observation of immunological responses associated with nano-enabled hyperthermia, which introduces a new avenue, allowing a potential paradigm shift from the acutely effective and cytotoxicity-centric response to the next-phase discovery, i.e., long-lasting and/or systemic anti-tumor immunity. This perspective first discusses the temperature-gradient and the spatially-structured immunological landscape in solid tumors receiving nano-enabled hyperthermia. This includes the discussion about underlying mechanism such as immunogenic cell death, which initiates a profound immunological chain reaction. In order to propagate the immune activation as a viable therapeutic principle, we further discussed the tumor type-specific complexity in the immunological tumor microenvironment, including the creative design of nano-enabled combination therapy to synergize with nano-enabled hyperthermia.

The opportunity of membrane technology for hydrogen purification in the power to hydrogen (P2H) roadmap

Hiep Thuan Lu, Wen Li, Ehsan Soroodan Miandoab, Shinji Kanehashi, Guoping Hu

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 3,   Pages 464-482 doi: 10.1007/s11705-020-1983-0

Abstract: The global energy market is in a transition towards low carbon fuel systems to ensure the sustainable development of our society and economy. This can be achieved by converting the surplus renewable energy into hydrogen gas. The injection of hydrogen (≤10% v/v) in the existing natural gas pipelines is demonstrated to have negligible effects on the pipelines and is a promising solution for hydrogen transportation and storage if the end-user purification technologies for hydrogen recovery from hydrogen enriched natural gas (HENG) are in place. In this review, promising membrane technologies for hydrogen separation is revisited and presented. Dense metallic membranes are highlighted with the ability of producing 99.9999999% (v/v) purity hydrogen product. However, high operating temperature (≥300 °C) incurs high energy penalty, thus, limits its application to hydrogen purification in the power to hydrogen roadmap. Polymeric membranes are a promising candidate for hydrogen separation with its commercial readiness. However, further investigation in the enhancement of H /CH selectivity is crucial to improve the separation performance. The potential impacts of impurities in HENG on membrane performance are also discussed. The research and development outlook are presented, highlighting the essence of upscaling the membrane separation processes and the integration of membrane technology with pressure swing adsorption technology.

Sharpest Contradiction and Most Favourable Opportunity ——A word on development of Chinese architectural

Wu Liangyong

Strategic Study of CAE 2004, Volume 6, Issue 2,   Pages 13-16

Abstract:

With the urbanization in China entering the period of accelerated development, the flourish of building industry has attracted numerous foreign architects offices to come to China for “seizing a beach before others”.The crisis for Chinese construction industry companies lies in the fact that they usually can not take charge of important projects but only act as secondaries or cooperators; urban planning and architectural design are not supported by comprehensive scientific demonstration and some big cities become test sites for freakish architectural designs of foreign architects; residential environment is not stressed on, economics and practicability is not given importance but instead peculiarity and novelty is one-sidedly sought for. This paper emphatically points out that architectural buildings and urban planning are closely related to the function, economy, technology, environment, etc. of a city, being an open macroscopic system of the city. Hence basic principles of architecture should be followed, more architectural factors should be considered so that architecture, landscape and urban planning are merged into a homogenous entirety. While the trend of globalization is tracked, more important is the inheritance and innovation of local and traditional culture. The academic level of a modern architect can only be based on his rich cultural background, trans-science learning and solid speciality knowledge.

Strategic Reflection on Promoting Energy Revolution of Production and Consumption in China

The Research Group of “Strategic Research on Promoting Energy Revolution of Production and Consumption

Strategic Study of CAE 2015, Volume 17, Issue 9,   Pages 11-17

Abstract:

Energy is an important basis for the sustained and sound development of Chinese economy and society. Energy revolution of production and consumption is the only way to promote China’s development. As a national development strategy of promoting energy revolution of production and consumption, it has been gradually implementing. This paper indicates the significance of driving energy revolution of production and consumption from the perspective of the relationship between energy, economy and society. It elaborates the background of China’s energy revolution, and analyzes the major issues which affect the energy revolution through the historical experience of developed countries. Finally it proposes strategies for energy revolution based on current situation, in order to provide reference and support for energy revolution in China.
